How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
Princeton Power Systems started in 2001 out of a dorm room at Princeton University as part of a senior project. With the help of a professor and an initial angel investor, the company initially focused on government research and development programs. Today, the company designs and manufactures advanced inverters that give clients the flexibility to harness a wide array of technologies, including solar, power storage batteries, wind power and diesel generators.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
Our UL and CE-certified power electronics are used in advanced battery operations and alternative energy, with built-in smart functions for ancillary services. We also build customized, integrated systems and design, commission and operate microgrids.

Take NJ Turnpike south to Exit 9 (New Brunswick-Rt. 18). Once past the toll booth, bear right towards Rt. 18 North. Take Rt. 18 North approximately 1.5 miles to the exit for Rt. 1 South (Trenton). Travel south on Rt. 1 for approximately 17 miles. Once you pass Quakerbridge Road, look for signs for 95 South. Take the exit for 95 South, merge onto 95 South and take the second exit (8A). Our facility will be your first right on Princeton Pike.

Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
Darren Hammell is President and CEO of Princeton Power Systems, a leading global designer and manufacturer of technology and software for energy storage, microgrid operations and electric vehicle charging. Darren graduated Cum Laude from Princeton University with a B.S.E. in Computer Science.
Darren took home top honors in the Princeton University Business Plan Contest and co-founded Princeton Power Systems in 2001. Since then, he has gone on to receive many other honors including winning the NJTC Early State Company of the Year Award and induction into the NJTC Technology Hall of Fame. He has been recognized by Star Ledger newspaper as one of “Four Unsung Heroes You Should Know”, by Red Herring magazine as “Young Moguls”, one of “30 Under 30” nationwide business leaders, and by NJBIZ as one of “Forty Under 40” business leaders in the State of New Jersey. Darren is a member of the State of New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development Clean Energy/Clean Technology Industry Workforce Advisory Council and a Founding Trustee of the non-profit New Jersey Solar Industry Manufacturer’s Association. As well, Darren joined the Einstein’s Alley Board of Directors in 2012 and the New Jersey Technology Council Board of Directors the same year.
Having secured private and public funding of over $30M, Darren has established an experienced and diverse Board of Directors, and developed and sold products in three distinct market areas – energy storage, microgrid operations and electric vehicle charging.
Darren is a frequent guest lecturer at Princeton University, and a panelist and keynote contributor on energy, the environment, and entrepreneurship at speaking events nationwide.
